Celebrating and reflecting on how far we have come

Welcome to the Gay People's Chronicle 2012 Pride Guide.

Since last year's Pride Guide, the military's ban on openly gay service members ended, New York instituted full same-sex marriage, the federal Defense of Marriage Act and California's Proposition 8 in suffered judicial defeats, and a ballot initiative to legalize same-sex marriage was introduced in Ohio.

Also at home, Dayton and Cincinnati approved domestic partner benefits for city employees, months after Cuyahoga County did the same.

Not everything is going well for the LGBT community, however. In the Republican presidential debates, the candidates overwhelmingly supported reinstating the military ban on gay personnel,

and all the candidates who made it through the first few months opposed same-sex marriage. There are still no LGBT anti-bias protections in either federal or Ohio law, although President Barack Obama and his cabinet have issued policies barring discrimination. AntiLGBT violence is still prevalent, even in progressive bastions like Columbus and Cleveland.

So as we honor the 43rd anniversary of the Stonewall riots, the birth of the modern LGBT rights movement, take a moment to reflect on what has been accomplished, what remains to be done, and celebrate. Celebrate those accomplishments, celebrate the opportunity to do so much more, and most of all, celebrate having sur-

vived for another Cleveland Pride, another Columbus Pride, another Cincinnati Pride, another Dayton Pride, another Youngstown Pride, another Akron We Are Family Too Picnic, another Toledo Pride.

As Ohioans, as Americans, as citizens of the world, come together and celebrate Pride.
